We’ve put together this timeline to explain the process of rush and to provide a detailed description of all the steps. While rush may appear different for each fraternity, everyone must follow these basic steps mandated by our IFC at Columbus State. It may seem like a lot, but we’ve broken it down in its entirety to better inform you. All the info you need to successfully rush is contained on this page and if you still have questions after reading this, feel free to shoot us an email and we’ll clarify things.
*Thanks to the Theta Xi Chapter for simplifying this process online.
Rush Rush is a period at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester in which fraternities meet and socialize with prospective members. Each fraternity will host a variety of events to showcase their brotherhood and to try and get to know you, the rushee. This is also an opportunity for you to gain insight into each fraternity and learn more about whom they are and what they do. The Rush period lasts one week. Check our Recruitment and Event Calendar pages for dates and activities.
Rush Ends Now that the Rush period is over, what happens next? Fraternities will now extend invitations to prospective rushes to continue on to the next stage. Often times, you will receive bids from more than one fraternity. Many rushees face the dilemma of being able to only chose one fraternity when they are interested in more than one. This will be one of the toughest decisions of your fraternity career. Carefully weigh all the pros and cons for each organization and decide which fits best for you. Remember, rush is only two weeks a semester, examine what each group will be like without the glitz and glamour and what they have to offer throughout your college career. Your choice may be Sigma Nu, or it may not be.
Open Rush
If a fraternity chooses to, they may accept more rushees through open rush. It is not as technical as formal rush and is usally set aside for students looking to rush who have busy schedules and could not attend formal rush.
Bid Handout / Slide Day This is the most important day of your fraternity career. At Columbus State, rushees confirm their fraternity choice by going down a water slide in front of the whole greek community (and onlookers). At this time, fraternities will gather on campus and create elaborate slides relating to their fraternity. Once you slide, congratulations, you are officially a candidate!
Pledgeship
Most people are familiar with the term "pledgeship". Pledging is the process of actually joining the fraternity. It encompasses a variety of topics and events, of which will make you aware of the customs and traditions of each chapter. Candidates learn tips and ways of improving themselves in the business world (because we are a business). They also learn ways of improving study habits, communications, and overall maturity.
Initiation and Brotherhood
Congratulations! That’s it, you did it! You now have the rest of your life to enjoy it. But remember, once you are Sigma Nu, you journey has just begun. The process begins again with a new rush class. The values you were taught must be relayed to them to continue a very cherished tradition!!
